MGI Perth

Graduate Application Tips

Preparing your graduate application

So you can picture yourself working with MGI Perth? Here are some tips to help make your application stand out.

Do your research

Before you start writing your application, learn as much as you can about MGI Perth. This will help you establish who we are, our services and our strategic direction. Make sure you can articulate how your strengths and career goals align with us and why you think you'll stand out in our organisation.

Include a cover letter

We will receive many applications for graduate vacancies, often all at once. A cover letter is very important as we will read this first and decide whether to look into your application in more detail. Please note, we will only assess applications that come with a cover letter.

Your cover letter should demonstrate that you understand the firm and that you are truly interested in the graduate position. The letter should:

  • be relevant to MGI Perth and the graduate position, clearly stating what position you are applying for
  • be brief and consice (no more than one page)
  • clearly define the qualities that make you suitable for the position
  • outline why you want to work with MGI Perth and the qualities that will make you an asset to the firm
  • indicate when you can start work, or if you have not yet graduated, indicate when you intend to graduate
  • always be proof read for spelling and grammar.

Attach a CV

Your resume should outline your career objectives, education and qualifications, employment history, other relevant training and skills. Even if you have not had any experience as an accountant, it is important to outline any other jobs you have, as many of these skills are transferable (i.e. team work).

Attach your academic transcript

While we do not rely solely on the results in your academic transcript, we may refer to it during the application process. If you have not yet graduated, please attach your results thus far.

Preparing for your interview

Be prepared

Learn as much as you can about MGI Perth, who we are, our services and our strategic direction. Make sure you can articulate how your strengths and career goals align with us and why you think you'll stand out in our organisation.

Be energetic and enthusiastic

We want you to be passionate and excited about the opportunity to join our team. We look for people with that bright spark; people who are driven, motivated to be the best they can and deliver results.

Be yourself

Try to relax and remember that we're interested in getting to know the real you. The reason you have been called in for an interview is because we are just as interested in you as you are in us. When preparing, it is helpful to think about how you'd like to communicate certain points but avoid over-rehearsing, as it may come across as impersonal.

Be professional

Take pride in your presentation. We will be looking for professionalism in how you dress, how you speak and what you choose to tell us about yourself.

Be punctual

Arrive at least 5 minutes early. It will give you a chance to collect your thoughts before the interview. If you are running late, call your interviewer and explain why.
